I grew up in in the Greater Los Angeles area and thus was Yiddish-challeged compared to someone who grew up in Manhattan, for example. I had to wait til college before my Yiddish vocabulary diversified to include more than the word schmuck. The best thing for those who don't know Yiddish is to pick up a copy of The Joys of Yiddish by Leo Rosten. Yiddish is a wonderfully expressive language and has loaned many expression to English, as Rosten documents in his book Hooray for Yiddish!
